Steve Florkewicz, 87, passed away on June 28, 2018. He was born on April 18, 1931 in Jersey City, NJ to Stephen Florkewicz, Sr. and Eugenia Florkewicz, both deceased. He graduated from Lyndhurst High School, Lyndhurst NJ, in 1949, and received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1953. After graduation, Steve began working at Wright Aeronautical Corporation in Woodridge, NJ. In 1958, Steve accepted a position with the Department of Defense as a Mechanical Engineer. Steve's career with the DoD spanned some 36 years, until he finally retired as a Quality Compliance Engineer in 1994.
On October 20, 1956, Steve literally married the “girl next door”, his childhood sweetheart, Carol. For the next 32 years they lived, and raised a family in West Caldwell, N.J. Shortly after retirement, they decided to relocate to the town of Saint Michaels, MD in 1997. They remained constant companions and soul-mates throughout their 61-year marriage.
Steve was a member of the N.A.R.F.E., and served on the St. Michaels Historic Commission for nine years. He was Vice President of the Men's Club at Christ Church in St. Michaels, Docent Guild member at Christ Church, and served on the Talbot County Planning Citizens Advisory Group.
In addition to his wife, Carol Ann Florkewicz, he is survived by his sister, Jeanette Christopher, his daughter, Lynette Wink, his son, Paul Florkewicz, and his granddaughter, Colby Hannah Florkewicz. His brother, Vincent Florkewicz, and two daughters, Christine and Marie Florkewicz, predeceased him.
A simple memorial service, followed by a reception, is planned for Saturday June 7th at 1:30 pm, to be held at the St. Mary's chapel at Leisure Park, 1400 Route 70 Lakewood, NJ 08701. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Steve had asked that donations be made to the ASPCA
Steve was a wonderful, intelligent man with a sagacious humor, who greeted everyone as a friend. He enjoyed boating and traveling up and down the Eastern seaboard with his family in their RV, but is likely best remembered for his long walks with his beloved dog Andy, and later with his faithful canine companion Dixie, as they visited many of the shops in town to offer their daily greetings. A committed, devoted, faithful and very loving husband, father, and grandfather, he will be greatly missed.
